Poll: Choose Your Superheroine

(The one on the top right is Fantomah, by the way)

Kacy’s post got me thinking about a favorite childhood pastime: choosing a superheroine for make believe purposes. So I went over to Wikipedia (an unimpeachable source, wink, wink) to peruse a list of some kind. I think that was a mistake: I’m still a little bit dizzy, and mulling unresolved feminist and post-feminist issues.  Just for fun, gut response, vote for the superheroine you would be if your current lifestyle were only a secret identity. Don’t worry about what you’d tell your next door neighbor or what you’d say in a job interview, vote so the 10-year-old inside of you will be thrilled!

Which Superheroine would you be?

I only listed women who were solo at some point (sorry, Invisible Girl from Fantastic Four) and have uniforms that aren’t utterly pornographic.  And, look, I’m not a comic book aficionado, so please, don’t hold me responsible for the serious details, alright?

Kacy says: Hahahah-nerds! That said, I would choose Jean Grey because she is basically god-like (Omega-level mutant). Plus she's her own person and not just the female version of an already famous male super hero and she's really nice and nurturing (like me) and also really pretty and smart and tasteful (for the most part).

Sorry, but I think Catwoman is more of an anti-superheroine.

  2. mimi says:

I’ve never even heard of spider-girl before, but I already know I’d be spiderman, so I figured spider-girl was safe. And although it’s not the proper interview answer, it’s strictly because “it’s soooo cool!”

  3. Jessie says:

I personally really like Rogue. Sure, she kills everything she touches, but in that way, she’s totally meant for Wolverine, who is pretty darn hot… she steals his energy and healing, he self-heals. She absorbs everyone else’s powers, meaning she could have any power she wanted, plus she can fly (in the 90’s cartoon series and comic strips).

Wow Cory has turned me into a nerd.

  4. Mary says:

I totally choose Elastagirl from the Incredibles. I know that’s not a comic book super hero, but she’s my favorite.

  5. talitha says:

I second Mary…I am a fan of Elastigirl.

  6. Mhef says:

Do I get all the awesome sound effects that go along with being Wonder Woman???

  7. christy says:

I also like Elastigirl - her skills are great for crime fighting, but also managing a household… love how she can handle her kids with those arms!

  8. Becky says:

What about Jan(?) from the Wonder Twins, “Wonder Twins activate, form of an eagle..”. She rocks and she gets to hang out with her brother.

  9. Angela says:

I’ve been reading for a while now and was waiting for that one post to push me over the edge and this is it. I have to say that Elastigirl is my absolute favorite, what mom wouldn’t want that super power? The Incredibles is my all-time favorite movie, it’s absolutely beautiful.

I have found my Superheroine : Red Tornado! The very first female superhero (introduced in 1939). Her costume is red longjohns with a frying pan for a hat. She was invited to the Justice Society of America to hang with Superman, Green Latern, et al. but due to an unfortunate mishap (her pants split) she had to leave before she could apply for membership. (Definitely sounds just like me). Her superpowers are (according to Wikipedia): “Decent scrapper, abnormally spry for a woman her size and age . . . . A motherly woman with a fiery personality . . . . She is well-liked by every member of the JSA, in part because of her expert skills at cooking, especially when it comes to baked treats.”
That’s me as a superhero, allright. Hooray, now I can go to a job interview with confidence. Now if only I had some marketable skills.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be like Zorro. Cool costume and a wicked blade. And then Princess Bride came out, and I thought Wesley’s costume was much more practical. “No Capes!”. Just add a little red piping trim, and it would be feminine enough for a girl. I was always jealous of the male superheroes growing up. I didn’t like how the females always had so much skin showing. I was born ultra modest I guess.

  12. Abby says:

I was thinking more like She-ra (part of the He-Man saga) or some kind of sword-wielding barbaric heroine who has some MAJOR combat skills using her own two hands, amazing legs, and her killer instinct. Now there’s a super hero!!! But I also think that turning invisible would be pretty rad, too, and handy in my line of work as a mom.

  13. IamLoW says:

I wish there was s choice of, “None”. I don’t know why, but I just can’t do the super hero thing. They bug me. I have no clue why, everyone else clearly knows something I don’t…. but I just can’t…..go there.. :-)

  14. hutchcal says:

Even before I read the comments, I was thinking that most of the Moms I know are already super heroes. Who else could do what we do? Even when I am feeling inadequate in the laundry department or whatever part of my home that is taking over, I still know that there are few mere mortals that could keep all those balls in the air.

So, I thought, Elastigirl has to be it! She’s been there, done that, and now uses those super powers to make a home for her family and raise other little super heroes, and, she can still put on that spandex and “do her thing” when she needs or wants to . Super!

  15. Dejah says:

Lady Deathstrike, have you see the nails on the chick?

  16. Tallmama says:

Ofcourse Wonder Woman is #1. How many of us had the Wonder Woman underwear outfit that we wore all the time running around the house. I know I did. You can’t beat a great pair of blue and white stared underwear.

  17. Her Royal Highness says:

I chose Wonder Woman, for the 10 year-old inside of me. But for the 30 year-old that I am, I want to be Elastigirl and even dressed the part a few Halloween’s ago.
cat woman is NOT a super hero. She was batman’s rival, not sidekick.

  18. staigerfamily says:

I am for elastagirl all the way. I mean, who couldn’t use that incredible stretching power during dinner (our meals always seem to end up just like the dinner scene in the movie). As a mom of four boys–I’m totally voting for elastagirl.

  19. summerlt says:

Wonder Woman all the way! If she could cook she would be the ultimate.

  20. Kerri says:

    Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld
This totally appeals to the little girl in me (and explains my daughter). She’s the Princess of a magic world and rides a Unicorn! I had no idea she existed until I read a list of superheroines and she was on it. As soon as I saw the word princess, I knew she was the one. Yeah, I totally know where my daughter gets it now.

  21. haileyjsmith says:

I’m with Kacy. I’ve always been a Jean Grey fan since I watched the X-Men cartoons with my little brother. She’s already awesome, then she become Phoenix and is super awesome–can’t beat that!

  22. zannezoo says:

It has to be wonder woman…I mean really…a tiara…stopping bullets with your braclets…a personal jet…the ablity to change outfits in 15 seconds…long think hair… and great legs…you can’t beat that!!!

  23. jurmston says:

I would love to be elasti-girl from the disney movie the incredibles. I would love it because once dinner is on the table and oops I forget to get the serving spoon the potatoes, BAM just stretch my arm to the drawer and voila a serving spoon is at the table without me having to leave my seat.
