Kristy’s post has me thinking about food storage. It’s another topic which stirs up a lot of feelings and opinions. What is yours? Choose one and please leave a comment if your food storage style hasn’t been covered.

  1. We bought about six cases of stuff at the cannery, um, 11 years ago. We’ve slowly been using it when DH has been laid off (three times in our marriage, present employer thinking about it), or when his paycheck just didn’t go that far. If we ever have disposable income again, I’ll restock with different stuff. I just can’t think of enough ways to cook pink beans that a kid would deign to eat

I’m an other. 72 hour kit is done and rotated every year. Storage is pretty well intact, but we actually store stuff we’ll eat and rotate it. Although, I may get a can of wheat to use as a weapon since I’m anti-gun…

We have Diet Coke in our storage. I figured we can barter THAT with the other Mormons for the things we forgot. :-)

We’ve lived off it recently and haven’t been able to stock back up. I figure the Lord understands. It was there for that purpose, right?

The week after my son was born, we got ambitious and went out to our local cannery to stock up on food. We were strolling around adding items to our cart when we were rudely informed that this was not a grocery store. Well yeah, we knew that. No, they told us. You cannot just come in and shop. You need to put in hours in order to buy. Ohhhhhhh. Next time to avoid confusion, they need to have a sign, “Must work for food” or something…. :-)

We have to watch how much stuff we have, with the military they only allot you a certain amount of pounds that they will move. Plus moving food is iffy anyway, depending on whose moving you. I do think I have a year’s supply of toothpaste. Nothing says survival like clean teeth!

The thing that bothers me the most about all the preparedness lists is how “feminine supplies” are barely an afterthought. Can you imagine the disaster of nobody having tampons, especially if there is no running water? They should put that stuff on the top of everyone’s list. Forget about oats!

  8. Beeba says:

I think we have a lock on the food. We have staples, as well as “fun” stuff (read: things we’ll actually eat). What I worry about is having enough water to hydrate things and get clean. I think I can handle anything if I can stay clean. I’m with Jennie about feminine products. And I worry about having enough toilet paper, too!

I’d love to begin our storage, but don’t know where to start. We only have a little money right now to spend and I’ve never even been to the cannery. If someone could just tell me how to begin instead of the huge laundry list of EVERYTHING we’ll eat in a year I’d be totally willing to listen!

  10. zannezoo says:

We build some up, life happens we then live off of it until we can build some up again…it seems to be an endless cycle. We also have stuff that everyone says you should have but honestly I think we would rather starve to death then eat some of the it and it is getting pretty old.

  11. Azucar says:

I’m with Zannezoo: we build some up and have at times had to dip into it. Right now we’re in a small condo and don’t have a lot of room to build up food storage. I also have four or five boxes of stuff from the cannery that I don’t ever plan on using unless the situation is dire. Call me nuts, but there is no way I’m using potato buds in my everyday cooking.

I stock up when there’s a sale and try to replace as I use. I can’t wait until we have a bigger place with more dedicated storage where I can actually put wheat and beans.
