Zucchini In New York

Remember a couple of weeks ago when Rachel enlightened us with all those zucchini recipes?  And remember when Emily commented on her lack of ability to grow zucchini in the Land of Milk & Honey?  I am much like Emily in this regard.  One of my visiting teachers gave me a cactus once (she knew me well) and even THAT didn’t survive in my hands.  Well now, Emily is somewhere on a cruise ship in Alaska wearing board shorts and entertaining her crew, so I feel it my civic duty to introduce you to this woman:

Apollonia Castitlione holds tight to giant zucchini at Queens home.

This is Apollonia Castitlione.  She lives in Queens.  She is pictured here with her SIX FOOT LONG ZUCCHINI that she grew in her backyard.  IN HER BACKYARD.  IN QUEENS.  Apollonia remarks, “I’ve had my vegetable garden for 26 years, but I never saw anything so spectacular.”  She elaborates on her secret, saying that she didn’t even use any Miracle Grow, “just a little bit of 5-10-5 fertilizer, water, and my time.”  Silly Apollonia.  Making it sound so easy.  Perhaps I should send her those recipes while Emily and I organize our move to Queens.

Lisa says: What is it with us LRS ladies not being able to grow anything edible? I've tried to grow tomatoes and zucchini for four years and NOTHING. I give up. (I get so mad when people tell me over and over how EASY it is--"fool-proof," they say!) So, congratulations, Apollonia. Way to go.

Emily says: I've seen some big zucchinis (or is the plural still "zucchini"? "Zucchinii?") Anyway, never have I seen an ultralong, skinny zucchini like this. What did she do, plant it in a rain gutter? (Peripherally, isn't "zucchini" a fun word to type?)

We even bought plants that had already started growing at Home Depot and still ended up with only two tomatoes, two cucumbers and no banana squash. I just feel like I must be sending some really bad vibes out there, because who fails at growing squash?

How did it not get huge and fat? You can usually make a canoe out of an overgrown zucchini!

Ok, so what is 5-10-5 fertilizer and where do I get it???

  7. I’d like to see that zucchini in someone’s car at church.

Anyone else think the name “Apollonia” only belonged to Prince’s cohort? I must say, I find the name AND the zucchini fascinating. And did she begin gardening at the age of 5? She looks so young.

Oh, I can grow big zucchini. They just look more like a huge baseball bats.
Why can’t I grow stuff that would actually be edible?
