Conference Packets

My good friend, Julie (Hey Julie, have fun in Switzerland!  Thanks for the links!), sent me some links for General Conference packets:  you know, for kids!  Topher and I have dreams of watching Conference in our pajamas, eating something delightful, and drinking deeply from the words of the prophets, using the time to reevaluate our lives, goals, and individual testimonies. The reality usually involves threatening our kids to calm down, straining to watch the tv over mounds of blankets and stuffed animals intended to be a tent where, once finished, is promised to be a quiet place to listen to Conference.  (Don’t worry, I don’t fall for it either.)

I don’t do the “skittles and/or M&M’s as Bingo pieces,” I just have them on hand to eat.  Has anyone ever completed their Bingo game and then rewarded themselves by eating the candy, or is that just a Mormon urban legend like Steve Martin joining the Church and moms who listen, calmly, through all of Sacrament Meeting?

I’m not making any promises, but one of these packets is one more tool in your arsenal for a minute or two of attention (to the tv, not your kids.)  It’s a glimmer of hope that the talks will at least sound familiar when you eventually read them in the Ensign, locked in your bedroom, while your kids finish that tent.

Here’s One.  Right Here!

Oh, and here’s another one!

Kristy says: I also have a friend who is an overachiever for a living, and she has these awesome conference packets on her website, along with a million other FHE packets that will make your head spin. I’m glad other people do this so I don’t have to.

Thanks for posting these. We watch conference on tv at home. I guess I should really start figuring out how to entertain a 6 year old, 2 year old and almost 1 year old so we can watch in peace and they are so bored.

Oh, and I love the Hudsucker reference! At least, I’m assuming that’s what you were aiming for. That line always goes through my head when I start talking about something for kids.

Great ideas. My cousin’s family gets ready for conference by reading King Benjamin’s sermon where his people gathered to listen with their tents facing his voice. Then they set up their tent in the family room to listen to our prophet speak to his people. Their kids LOVE it. We’ll try it this year, seems to build a lot of anticipation for little kids. Enjoy the weekend!

We have actually waited until Bingo is finished to eat the M&Ms. The youngest in the group was 17.

I have a friend who does the King Benjamin thing too. We’ve been watching online and I usually watch it during naptime/bedtime, so I can actually watch it. It helps that my kids are still young enough to do that.

We have been making conference packets for years now and I feel that they have been very successful. My older kids have to report what they learned at the next FHE and we try to talk about the talks during the next six months during subsequent FHE’s. Maybe it is because when we lived in Nebraska we had to go to the Stake Center to watch conference and I always felt that I listened better when I did it that way. Now as a family, we go to the church for all the conference sessions. My husband (who was raised in Utah) hates it, but has gotten used to it after all these years. We do a huge FHE the Monday before Conference and make conference packets complete with pictures of all the General Authorities. On Friday night we set up our tents, like King Benjamin, and read in Mosiah. Then on Saturday and Sunday we go off to the church in our Sunday clothes to listen. (I am already trying to psyche myself up to do this once again without my husband who is away and with 5 kids) Maybe if I lived in Utah it would be different, but this has really worked for our family. We don’t get conference on Cable, and the times we have tried to watch it online has been a nightmare. I really believe that if we get our kids excited for conference they will see what a blessing it is and how fortunate we are as Latter-Day Saints to have a living prophet. Wow, this is long, Sorry.

  8. I liked how the last page of the first packet as “CTR” right above “Family”. It can also double as a dating packet with dire warnings like “Does his mother refer to you as ‘that girl’ instead of your real name? If so, this is NOT choosing the right family.”

This is the first year in at least 5 that I get to watch conference from home in my jammies. I’m so excited!

I have lived in Utah and California - and even though we can get it on cable here, I too prefer to go to the Stake Center to watch it - I pay better attention.

I like going to the Stake Center for Women’s Conference, but GC needs to be at home. At least while I have young children. We talked about this a little while ago, but I feel I need to mention it again. I LOVE TiVo!
