One of my greatest gifts is my sense of smell–and I don’t hide that gift under a bushel, either. I use it every day to strengthen it and serve others.
One of my favorite rooms in our house is my office. Of course I enjoy going in it to blog but I have noticed that the office is always one smell behind the rest of the house–a peculiar effect of air circulation or vent placement. I love it. It’s like a scrapbook of smell in here. If I did laundry yesterday, the fresh smell in the office will remind me “You did laundry yesterday!” If Ellen had a poopy diaper in the vicinity, the smell will find it’s way to the office eventually. Even that is kind of a treat because you have the smell which is in and of itself unpleasant, BUT the office says “Remember how you changed that stinky poop diaper a while ago? It’s all taken care of now. You are such a good mom!”
A week ago I made Hamburger Pie (that’s Shepherd’s Pie to you). It made for excellent leftovers. So excellent, in fact, that I filled a huge dinner plate (diameter ten inches) with it. It looked like a topographical map of the world. I warmed it up and took it into the office to eat while reading blogs. That memory (and it was a sweet one) was also preserved in the office until the next day when the Hamburger Pie was all gone. Office reminded me, “Remember how you had that obscenely huge serving of leftover Hamburger Pie yesterday? That was a good day and you make delicious Hamburger Pie. You are a good and talented person.”
My hope is that, even if your sense of smell is not as keen as mine, you have a special room/alcove/closet like this in your home that brings you joy.
