Here are 5 great ideas for gifts for your neighbors this holiday season from our friend Lizabeth. Sometimes it is hard to be creative every year and think of something new, so this year Lizabeth has done the work for you.  Hope you enjoy!

5 Great Neighbor Gifts

I’m excited to guest post about neighbor gifts!  My own neighbors will see the irony of me writing on such a topic since my usual neighbor gifts include:  a) sugar, b) chocolate and, quite often, c) both.  Last year I gave sweets delivered on a pretty Christmas tray (for them to keep). Don’t get me wrong, homemade candies and cookies are great neighbor gifts but I was looking for something a little more unusual to give this year. Here are some great ideas I found.

1. The 12 Days of Christmas.  My sister-in-law, Stephanie, said that her family’s favorite neighbor gift was one that came for TWELVE days!  Nothing big on any given day – maybe an ornament or a poem – but their delight came from never finding out who was treating them.  Another friend, Linda, received this gift and said it really touched her because on the final day her gift included a framed picture of the Savior. Not only is that fun and inexpensive but helps everyone think of the true meaning of Christmas.

2. Sparkling Cider.  Friends love to give, receive and stockpile these lovely bottles of non-alcoholic carbonated juice.  You could decorate each bottle with a simple red bow or go all-out and make it a black-tie affair.  My friend, Benay, came up with this vest and apron to adorn the bottles.  Plus, check out the adorable knitted hat and scarf bottle topper from Sundance Catalog.

3. A Snowman Kit. No more running around trying to assemble a snowman with your best scarf and mittens.  Everything is already in a handy bag.  Be creative and assemble it from things you already own or purchase wood craft pieces and put it together however inspiration strikes. Collect castoffs all year long from garage sales or second-hand shops, or consider knitting version from inexpensive yarn.

4. Fruits, Vegetables & Nuts.  My friend Julie, who was dieting one Christmas, loved getting a few oranges.  Another friend gave me a relish tray for Christmas Eve and — you know what? — that is still my favorite neighbor gift EVER!  I have heard of people wrapping up a pineapple with a burlap bow and a Christmas note. Give what you have, or have access to, or something you love personally; it is sure to be appreciated.

5. Poinsettia Plant.  This gift is beautiful alone or given with the Luke II video from the distribution center.  Easy. Inexpensive. Beautiful. Classy. Poisonous, too, for children and dogs so give with discretion if you think there is any chance the recipient’s children or pets might munch on the plant.

I love the addition of “poisonous” on the last one. Just not something you expect to hear when talking about Christmas gifts for the neighbors. Or is it?

It’s actually an urban legend that poinsettias are poisonous. Someone would have to eat more than a pound of leaves and/or bracts to suffer any ill effects–that’s several hundred leaves. You’re more likely to have an allergy to the latex in the sap.

    Love the snowman kit!

  3. [...] you are a TRUE geek like me, Lizabeth’s hubby.) The guest post is up! You can see it over at http://www.lightrefreshmentsserved.com and it looks good. Here is the image for the knitted bottle toppers that they didn’t post [...]

Where are you moving in Texas?

Love the comments. I have to go back and rethink my formerly subconscious thoughts about poisoning my neighbors. Nakedmolerate – my kids could probably get away with more than a pound ingested before I pulled myself away from the computer to notice (horrible, I know). We’re moving to Spring, Texas – looking at Magnolia, Spring and Tomball. Any suggestions? Love your blog! Thx,everyone! xoxo Lizabeth

  6. We always gave away and received Christmas oranges. And every year, Santa would leave us an orange in our stockings. I still associate oranges with Christmas. :)
