Now that it’s too cold to go through talking therapy walking up the mountains with my friends in the morning, I’ve been spending my mornings learning yoga with Pricilla. Disclaimer: While I advocate exercise for a variety of reasons (that are hard to remember when I wake up every morning), I have been exercising consistently for months and have not lost any weight. My sister, exercise guru Gina, who graduated in ankle wrapping Physical Therapy, will quickly tell me that it’s because I eat too much and that I need to exercise AND cut my calories down, while I’m quick to tell her that no one asked her and no one cares that she lettered in football in high school, and please pass the peanut butter cups, thankyouverymuch.
I like Pricilla because she speaks in a soft tone and she goes slowly. She also tells me things like “a positive attitude is contagious,” and hasn’t once suggested I lay off cheeseburgers (which I consider a mark of integrity). She is in her late 50’s and while she looks younger than she is, she encourages me by reminding me “We need to stretch our joints because they get stiff at our age,” and “This exercise will help us form that natural girdle we lose as we get older.” I might not be her target audience because I’m in my mid 30’s, which alarms me because some of the stuff she tells me to do I CAN’T DO. So I’m exercising not only my body, but also taking an exercise in humility. I think that should count for something. Namely, in calories. In a perfect world, it would translate to calories.
